After 3 turns or so, I stopped applying pressure and screwed the tap into the exhaust manifold until about 3 threads were protruding into the inside of the manifold (important because the NPT taps are tapered). I slid my 1/8 NPT tap into the ratchet end of an 18" 1/4 drive socket extension and, while applying some pressure to the end of the extension with my palm, turned the extension with a 1/4 open end wrench. After cleaning all of the debris from the inside of the manifold I opened up the pilot hole with an 11/32 drill bit, while making sure to brace my hand and the drill in the same spot throughout the entire process to keep the hole as strait and square as possible. To start with, I marked my drill site with a small punch and drilled a 1/8 inch pilot hole. In order for my hands and drill to fit into the tight space, I also had to remove the vacuum motor attached to the EGR cooler. By removing the EGR cooler pipe I would be able to insert my finger and a telescoping magnet into the manifold to remove any particles of metal.
What I found was a little piece of real estate between the EGR port and the cat.
